Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing Therapy for Mums
Process Past Trauma, Feel Better Now
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (or EMDR for short) is a psychological therapy developed by Franice Shapiro in 1987. It is an internationally recognised treatment for trauma, as well as other psychological difficulties such as anxiety disorders and depression.
EMDR is used to help those living with difficult past experiences that are still emotionally affecting them in the here and now. Healing from past trauma not only improves how you feel day to day, but also improves your overall quality of life.
EMDR works in a similar way to the Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep phase. Just as REM sleep helps our brains process the events and experiences of the day, the rapid eye movements experienced during EMDR stimulate the brain’s natural process for healing. This can desensitise the emotional distress you feel in the present when you think of the distressing event. It can also help change the meaning of that traumatic event and prevent it from shaping how you think, feel and behave now.
What is Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy?
How Can EMDR Help Me?
EMDR was initially used to treat Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), but there is a growing evidence base to show its effectiveness in treating the following difficulties:
- Perinatal Trauma including trauma through conceiving/infertility, birth trauma, breastfeeding trauma, termination for medical reasons and pregnancy after loss
- Phobias
- Generalised Anxiety
- Low self-esteem
- OCD
- Grief/loss
- Depression and/or caused by adverse life experiences
- Sexual assault
- Accidents
- Relationship Trauma
- Childhood Trauma
What Should I Expect?
Treatment sessions last 50 minutes and are conducted in person or remotely via Microsoft Teams. Appointments are offered on a weekly basis.
We will begin by conducting a full history of your life, identifying difficult past experiences that may be linked to your current symptoms/behaviours. Based on this, we’ll establish some treatment goals.
Initially, we’ll work on emotion regulation strategies to enable you to adequately self-soothe in and outside of your therapy sessions. Then we will start processing the trauma memory/ies. At the end of each session, we will practice your emotional regulation strategies to ensure you feel calm enough to leave.
It’s important you have time to rest and look after yourself after each EMDR session. It is likely you will feel physically and emotionally tired, so it’s vital to give yourself plenty of time to process your session before returning to your day.
Each session with me is £125 and lasts 50 minutes.
I work Tuesday - Friday 9-3pm. I provide face-to-face therapy in my beautiful garden office in the Milton Keynes, MK3 area (you’ll receive the full address upon booking). There’s plenty of free on-street parking available and my therapy room is large enough for you to bring your baby if you want or need to.
I also offer EMDR remotely via Microsoft Teams. You’re welcome to book a mix of both face-to-face and remote sessions – I’m happy to go with whatever feels best for you.
What Does It Cost?
What my clients say...
100% recommend.
I started therapy with Laura to work on my grief after a miscarriage and stayed with her during my next pregnancy and during my first year as a mum. I cannot be more thankful to her for helping me navigate all the emotions, anxiety and everything that comes in hand with all those listed experiences.
We worked with CBT and EMDR therapies and both gave me an ample set of tools to work with for the rest of my life.
Laura’s kindness and her down to earth advice is what motivated me to come to the sessions every time, as I knew they were going to be helpful, and I was going to leave the session refreshed and with a better mindset.
I really cannot thank Laura enough for the effects of her therapy in my life.
I would highly recommend getting therapy with Laura. She is so easy to talk to and really listens, validates your feelings and helps you to problem solve. I have seen her for both CBT and EMDR and both have been extremely helpful to me. Laura has supported me through my miscarriage, past trauma memories and other issues. She is so friendly and makes you feel very comfortable so it feels easy talking to her. EMDR has really helped me face past traumas and present triggers for me to gain the closure that I needed to move forward, so I am really grateful as this is such a positive step forward in my life and I am very grateful to Laura for this. Thank you so much!
I contacted Laura for help dealing with postnatal anxieties I had developed stemming from some experiences I had found traumatic whilst on maternity leave. I’m so glad I reached out rather than keep struggling on. Laura helped me massively with EMDR therapy, which I had never come across before but Laura explained everything so well and made me feel comfortable throughout the process.
Laura also helped me identify my own negative thought patterns (how to spot them / challenge them) which is something I will carry forward with me and keep using.
Laura is so personable and non-judgemental in her approach and I would recommend her to anyone. She is a wonderful therapist.
Thank you for helping me to get un-stuck and feel like myself again.
