Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing Therapy for new, existing & expectant mums

Process Past Trauma, Feel Better Now

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (or EMDR for short) is a psychological therapy developed by Franice Shapiro in 1987. It is an internationally recognised treatment for trauma, as well as other psychological difficulties such as anxiety disorders and depression.

EMDR is used to help those living with difficult past experiences that are still emotionally affecting them in the here and now. Healing from past trauma not only improves how you feel day to day, but also improves your overall quality of life.

EMDR works in a similar way to the Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep phase. Just as REM sleep helps our brains process the events and experiences of the day, the rapid eye movements experienced during EMDR stimulate the brain’s natural process for healing. This can desensitise the emotional distress you feel in the present when you think of the distressing event. It can also help change the meaning of that traumatic event and prevent it from shaping how you think, feel and behave now.

How Can EMDR Help Me?

EMDR was initially used to treat Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), but there is a growing evidence base to show its effectiveness in treating the following difficulties:

  • Perinatal Trauma including trauma through conceiving/infertility, birth trauma, breastfeeding trauma, termination for medical reasons and pregnancy after loss
  • Phobias
  • Generalised Anxiety
  • Low self-esteem
  • OCD
  • Grief/loss
  • Depression and/or caused by adverse life experiences
  • Sexual assault
  • Accidents
  • Relationship Trauma
  • Childhood Trauma

What Should I Expect?

Treatment sessions last up to an hour and are conducted in person or remotely via Microsoft Teams. Appointments are offered on a weekly basis.

We will begin by conducting a full history of your life, identifying difficult past experiences that may be linked to your current symptoms/behaviours. Based on this, we’ll establish some treatment goals.

Initially, we’ll work on emotion regulation strategies to enable you to adequately self-soothe in and outside of your therapy sessions. Then we will start processing the trauma memory/ies. At the end of each session, we will practice your emotional regulation strategies to ensure you feel calm enough to leave.

It’s important you have time to rest and look after yourself after each EMDR session. It is likely you will feel physically and emotionally tired, so it’s vital to give yourself plenty of time to process your session before returning to your day.

Each session with me is £115 and lasts up to an hour. I work Monday - Friday 9-3pm. I provide face-to-face therapy in my beautiful garden office in the Milton Keynes, MK3 area (you’ll receive the full address upon booking). There’s plenty of free on-street parking available and my therapy room is large enough for you to bring your baby if you want or need to. I also offer EMDR remotely via Microsoft Teams. You’re welcome to book a mix of both face-to-face and remote sessions – I’m happy to go with whatever feels best for you.
